First of all -
Where is SHREWSBURY?

Map of the areaThe short answer is that it's where the little red dot is on the map (clicking on the map will take you to a more detailed map of the area round Shrewsbury).
The more important answer is that as you can see it's very central in the U.K. - central enough to be easy to get to from major airports (see our transfers page) and also in reach of many of the places you'll probably want to see on a visit to Britain.

And then -
WHAT is Shrewsbury?

The answer here is that it's whatever you want it to be.  Factually it's the county town of the area of England called Shropshire, and it has about 98,000 people. Built in a U-shaped meander of the River Severn, it  has 1000 years of active history as well as plenty of healthy modern development.

So people who come to Severnvale to learn English find that Shrewsbury can be many things for them ...

... a bustling, lively market town ...

And lastly -
Why is Shrewsbury such a good place to learn English?

Well, when you come to study English, there are a number of things you need - firstly, a friendly, safe town where the local people actually welcome foreign visitors; then, you’ll want to be immersed in the English language through being surrounded by English people and culture all the time, to integrate you fully into English life. And of course, you’ll want lots to see and do.
Shrewsbury can offer you all of these. Apart from being one of the finest medieval towns in England, with its black-and-white buildings, it has excellent facilities, with multi-screen cinemas, sports halls, golf courses, theatre, excellent pubs & restaurants, and superb shopping. And it’s easy to get to - just 3 hours from London, an hour from Birmingham, Manchester & Liverpool, and close to the mountains and coast of Wales.

Yet because it’s a wealthy, non-industrial town, social problems like violence and poor areas are no worry. Known as "The Town of Flowers", Shrewsbury, with its population of around 100,000, is simply ideal, with delightful houses, parks and friendly people who speak GOOD English.  In so many towns in the south of England, and the ‘famous’ towns like Oxford & London, there are thousands of foreign visitors, and there are often problems between the local population and the visiting students... you’re unlikely to find the English people so friendly and welcoming, because they are surrounded by foreigners every day of the year. But here in Shrewsbury you’ll find yourself speaking English to English people virtually all the time.

What could be better for your English progress?
